A public protest against a proposed 44 percent water rate hike is catching steam in East San Jose and getting the attention of a powerful state senator.

“I’m going to listen,” Senator Jim Beall told a group of residents at a District 5 United (http://www NULL.district5united NULL.org/) meeting at Dr. Roberto Cruz Alum Rock Library. “But I’m going to do something about it. That’s the bottom line.”
In January 2012, the San Jose Water Company filed a request with the California Public Utilities Commission (http://www NULL.cpuc NULL.ca NULL.gov/puc/)to charge customers 21.5 percent more this year, 4.87 percent more in 2014 and 12.59 percent more in 2015. Over three years, the increased rates would generate $95,154,000. The CPUC has not yet made a decision.

When heavy rains flooded Lake Cunningham Park, creating a series of mini lakes and flooded parking lots, San Jose park rangers Angie Martinez and Penny Lee didn’t hesitate to leave the comfort of their warm four-wheel drive vehicle.

They were on a mission to save a lone mole who had taken shelter under the warm idle of their truck.
As Lee nudged the shivering mole into a box, she and Martinez hiked it up a muddy hill and released it onto dry land under a bushy canopy, reaffirming their dedication to protect not only humans, but also wildlife, no matter how small.
Last month, city park rangers celebrated their 40th anniversary, (https://www NULL.piersystem NULL.com/external/content/document/1914/1621543/1/Park%20Ranger%20Program%20Celebrates%2040%20Years_Release NULL.pdf) with a city council commendation for service in seven regional parks, neighborhood parks and trails throughout San Jose. News BriefsCounty Supervisors to Hear From Public on 2014 Budget
Before the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors votes on the $4.6 billion 2014 recommended budget, residents and other stakeholders will have a chance to hear presentations and voice their opinions at a series of hearings beginning on Monday, June 17, 2013. The board will vote on the budget on June 21.
All hearings will be in the Board Chambers, 70 West Hedding Street, San Jose, or you can watch them streamlined through the Internet.
Here is the schedule:
- Monday, June 17 1:30 p.m. – Overview and Health and Hospital
- Tuesday, June 18 at 1:30 p.m. – Finance and Government Operations
- Tuesday, June 18 at 6:30 p.m. – Children, Seniors, and Family
- Wednesday, June 19 at 1:30 p.m. – Public Safety and Justice and Housing, Land Use, Environment and Transportation
