Beginning in March, many San Jose streets will look a little brighter as the city reconnects 900 streetlights that were shut off intentionally (http://www3 NULL.sanjoseca NULL.gov/clerk/CommitteeAgenda/Rules/20081119/RULES20081119_g1 NULL.pdf) in 2008-2009 to save money, causing safety concerns in some neighborhoods.

The San Jose City Council approved the action at its Tuesday, February 12, meeting as part of a mid-year 2012-2013 budget adjustment. At the same time, the city is also scrambling to repair lights darkened by copper wire thefts.
Council members appeared eager to approve the proposal to relight the 900 lights, which will cost $44,000 for equipment, materials and overtime pay to replace the lamps and fuses and an ongoing cost of $92,000 to pay for the electricity. The shut-off program saved the city about $77,000 a year in energy costs.

Bicyclists navigating across San Jose streets may have an easier and safer way to reach their destinations this summer.
The San Jose City Council on Tuesday, April 10, (http://www NULL.sanjoseca NULL.gov/clerk/Agenda/20120410/20120410a NULL.pdf) approved a project that will take away lanes used by cars and add eight miles of bike lanes on streets in Downtown San Jose. The $1.8 million project, paid for with a grant, will make way for Valley Transportation Authority’s Downtown Public Bike Share System to be launched in the fall.

San Jose has scheduled Community Budget meetings across the city to give residents an overview of the 2013-2014 budget, field questions and hear concerns about spending and revenues. Meetings have been held in San Jose Council Districts 8 and 1, but will continue this week and throughout May in other districts.
